Landelijke Appelplukdag / National Apple Picking Day

Afgelopen zaterdag was het Landelijke Appelplukdag! En om bij ons in de buurt fruit te plukken moet je naar de Philips Fruittuin. Deze is rond 1930 opgericht met in eerste instantie als doel: Werkverschaffing voor gezinsleden van Philips medewerkers en ook om medewerkers van Philips te laten profiteren van goedkope fruitprijzen. Inmiddels is dat concept achterhaald en is de fruittuin nu toegankelijk voor iedereen. En op de Landelijke Appelplukdag kan iedereen er naar hartelust appels en peren plukken (en nog andere fruit- en groentensoorten kopen in de winkel. Joram heeft het heerlijk gehad, al is het wel moeilijk om in een appel te bijten als je vier voortanden mist. Het had de dag ervoor enorm geregend en we waren blij dat we regenlaarzen aanhadden! We gingen naar huis met negen kilo appels en peren. Dus je begrijpt dat ik de volgende dag gelijk een appeltaart heb gebakken!

Last Saturday was National Apple Picking Day! To pick some apples in our neighbourhood we had to go to the Philips Fruitgarden. This garden was founded around 1930 and originally ment to give familymembers Philips employees work. Besides that it was also an opportunity for Philips employees to buy cheap fruit. That is all history and nowadays the fruit is available for everybody. And on the National Apple Picking Day everybody can pick apples and pears (and buy more fruit and veggies in their store) Joram had a great time though it is really hard to bite an apple when you are missing four front teeth. The before it had been raining cats and dogs so our boots were very welcome there. We went home with nine kilogrammes of apples and pears. So you understand that I baked an applepie the next day!
