Paper Wreath tutorial

If you arrived here from The Scrap Shoppe: Welcome to my tutorial for this years Home Made Christmas.

This would be a great home decor item for Christmas but leaving the Christmas wish behind, it would make a great all year round wreath. What about putting 'welcome' on there and hanging it on your front door? (Just make sure it won't get wet.....................)

I made this and I was amazed about how easy this was and how good the final result. I am going to try and explain to you how to make this. This is what you need:

• Styrofoam wreath (mine was about 8" diameter)
• Old book (I used a paperback book)
• Pins (regular or short ones, does not really matter)
• Ink for the edges
• Ribbon

You don't really need the following items but you can if you want to spice it up:

• A decoration piece for in the wreath (I used a wooden star about the size of the inner opening of the wreath, this can be your guideline for buying))
• Glitter spray (there's probably tons of people that would say you can't, but I used glitter hairspray, I use it all the time on projects and never damaged anything and it is a frugal option)

You start with tearing pages out of your book. Don't try and do it to neatly, but do make sure you still have whole pages. I started with 50 pages and I could not really tell you how much I used in the end but you can always take more out or throw the leftovers in the waste paper (or your fire place, ha!)

Then ink the sides of your pages. Again: Don't try and do it to neat. This is a great project to let go of your perfectionism, I had a hard time with it and at the same time lots of fun.....

When you have some pages inked you can started attaching them to the wreath. I used those tiny needles that you use for decorating, but you can use whatever you have lying around. Well, as long as they don't come out the other side of your wreath I guess...................)

The hardest thing for me to explain is how to fold the pages. I tried to take pics of it, but it is always hard to takes pics of the entire process.

You start by folding your pages over lenghtwise BUT: don't really fold/crease it! You just sort of put it together without really folding it (this does not really sound too good does it? I just hope the pics are more clear than I am). When you are done folding attach it to the wreath as showed in the pic. This will be your first layer. There are three layers in total. Use as much pins as neccesary to keep the papers in place. Mine has two, sometimes three.

This might be handy to mention: Most of my pics were taken from the back of the wreath. For me it was the handiest to work on the back too, but I guess that is all up to you!

You keep putting pages on until your first layer is completely filled. Thep aged overlap a little about a 1/3" or so. Again, don't be to precise, it can be half an inch on the one and 1/4 on the other one. 

When your first layer is done we keep on moving to the second layer: This layer will be placed about two inches lower than the first one. I swear I took pictured from starting the firstl ayer too but I can't find them anywhere so you will have to do it with the pic of when the second layer is on. You can see in the pic that the second layer is much lower than the first. Again: don;t measure anything, just do it by sight. Trustm e, it will work out great. When your second layer is done the back of your wreath will look like this:

And this will be the front: Again you can see that my pages are not lined up at all. How are we doing with letting perfectionism go?

If you are still with me here you are doing great, we are almost done. We are now starting the third layer. This layer will will placed overtop of the firstl ayer but than facing the other way (so outside the wreath) This will make your wreath look fuller and cover up any of the styrofoam that was still visible after the first two layers. The pic will show you where about to place the third layer and what it will look like when you're done (again: from the back)

At this point your wreath is done and you can start decorating. You don't have to if you like it like this and you can use whatever you like to decorate it. If you decide to leave it like this you will only have to attach to ribbon to hang it. I used three different kinds of ribbon and fibers and placed them just around the wreath on top and bottom.

This is what I did with the star: I inked the edges with the same color ink I used for the pages and cut a shape with my Silhouette and adhered it to the star. You can use stickers, chipboard or whatever you like on it. Just look at it like a little canvas.

I attached the star with the twine that came with it but you can use whatever twine or ribbon that you like. This is what my wreath looks like.

Home made Halloween banner / Zelfgemaakte halloween slinger

I was looking for a layout to make and I came across a sketch from Let's Scrap with a banner on it and all of a sudden I found my inspiration: I was going to make a Halloween banner. The pennants were handcut out of chipboard that I have collected over the years (See, never throw anything out, you'll need it in the long run). I still had a cardstock Halloween stack and some embellishments, rub-ons and felt so nothing could have stopped me.

I love how it turned out. The pennants are about 8" high. I cut straight pennants out of the chipboard and covered them with cardstock which I used my border punch on. It took me a while to get the hang of the measurements of the cardstock BEFORE punching the border but I figured out a really neat little trick. I'll post that later with some pics.

Ik was inspiratie aan het opdoen voor een layout en vond deze in een sketch van Let's Scrap. Op die layout stond een vlaggetjesslinger en mijn idee was geboren: Ik ging een Halloween slinger maken. Ik had nog een blok met Halloween papier, rub-ons en wat andere dingen dus dat moest het probleem niet zijn. De vlaggetjes zijn gesneden uit karton wat ik door de jaren heen heb verzameld (Zie je, nooit iets weggooien, het kan altijd van pas komen)

Ik vind ze echt helemaal leuk geworden. De vlaggetjes zijn ongeveer 20 cm hoog. Ik heb ze gewoon recht uit het karton gesneden en ze vervolgens beplakt met dessinpapier dat ik eerst weer met een randpons had bewerkt. Ik ben heel lang bezig geweest om de juiste maat van het papier te krijgen VOORDAT ik het ging ponsen, maar het er uiteindelijk een heel handig foefje voor bedacht. Dat zal ik later plaatsen.

Birthday gift for Teacher / Verjaardagscadeau voor de Juf

Nothing harder than thinking of a birthday present for a teacher. Since Joram's teacher Miss Jill announced the celebrating of her birthday only a few days before the actual 'party' we had hardly time to arrange something. Normally the children in class would make something for her but that was nearly impossible this time.

Joram went on a field trip Tuesday and I went along as a class parent and was seated beside one of the other teachers. Jill just moved and so I could ask her collegae about her interior. She has all natural colors in her house so the first part of my chore was done!

The second part was even harder: Thinking about what to make and then make it in only a few hours (the field trip was on Tuesday and Jill celebrated her birthday on Wednesday.............aaaaaargh).

This is what I came up with. I made a punch collage in a frame with a quote about teaching, all in the colors that would match her interior.

Even though I as pretty stressed about the little amount of time I had I was pretty content with the final result. And even better: Jill loved it.

Her goodbye present will be made by the children in her class, I promise.......................


Niets moelijker dan het verzinnen van een cadeautje voor een leerkracht. Helemaal omdat Joram's juf Jill het vieren van haar verjaardag maar een paar dagen van tevoren aankondigde. Normaal gesproken maken we altijd iets met de kinderen in de klas maar dat was deze keer onmogelijk.

Joram is afgelopen dinsdag op schoolreisje geweest en ik ging mee als klassenouder. In de bus zat ik naast een van de andere leerkrachten en kon toen een beetje vissen naar het interieur van het huis van Jill. Ze is net verhuisd dus de collega's waren op bezoek geweest. Ik kwam er achter dat ze allemaal natuurlijke kleuren in haar huis heeft: Deel een van de opdracht was volbracht!

Het tweede gedeelte van de opdracht was een stuk lastiger. De schoolreis was op dinsdag en Jill vierde haar verjaardag op woensdag. Ik had dus maar een paar uur om iets te bedenken en het dan ook nog te maken........Aaaaargh.
Dit is wat ik bedacht had: Ik heb in een lijst een collage gemaakt van uitgeponste rondjes en daarbij een quote over het lesgeven. Allemaal in de kleuren die in haar interieur passen.

Ondanks de race tegen de klok ben ik toch tevreden over het uiteindelijke resultaat. En nog beter: Jill vond het helemaal leuk.

Haar afscheidskado wordt wel door de kinderen gemaakt. Beloofd is beloofd...................

Scrapped gift for friends / Een cadeau voor vrienden gescrapt

Friends of ours celebrated their birthdays last weekend and I knew she liked my scrapping items that I have hanging on the wall over the dinner table. She send me some pics of her three children and I started scrapping on Saturday night and the party was on Sunday (pressure???? No way............) At first my printer did not want to print and after that I just could not find what I wanted to use (and I knew I had it............Aaaargh)

Even though I did not have a whole lot of time I was pretty content with the final result. And........ it was my first time sewing on a layout!

I framed it in Ikea's Ribba frame (50x50 cm) and gave it away. They loved it. I love the Ribba frames to frame my layouts in. Their outer size is 50x50 cm and the inner size is 30x30cm. So just a half a centimetre smaller than my LO's. Perfect! I personally like the white ones, but they also come in black, silver and a couple of wood colours. I think white is the best because the main focus will stay on the layout. But I guess that is just a matter of taste.

Vrienden van ons vierden afgelopen weekend hun verjaardagen en ik weet dat zij mijn layouts die boven de eettafel hangen erg mooi vindt. Ze stuurde mij een paar foto's van haar drie kinderen en ikben aan de salg gegaan. Zij vierden hun verjaardagen op zondag en ik ging zaterdagavond aan de slag (Stress? Helemaal niet.............) Het erge was nog dat eerst mijn printer niet wilde printen en vervolgens kon ik niet vinden waar ik mee wilde werken (en ik wist zeker dat ik het had.......................Ggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr........)

Ondanks dat ik niet zo heel veel tijd had was ik toch erg tevreden met het uiteindelijke resultaat. En......... het was de eerste keer dat ik genaaid heb op een layout!

Ik heb de layout ingelijst in de Ribba (50x50cm) lijst van Ikea, ingepakt en weggegeven. Ze vonden het erg mooi. Ik vind de Ribba lijsten geweldig om mijn layouts in in te lijsten. De buitenmaat van de lijst is 50x50 centimeter en de binnenmaat 30x30 centimeter, dus net een halve centimeter kleiner dan mijn layouts. Perfect dus!

Ik heb een persoonlijke voorkeur voor de witte lijsten maar ze zijn er in zilver, zwart en een aantal houtkleuren. Ik vind dat met een witte de aandacht het meeste op de layout ligt. Maar dat is ook een kwestie van persoonlijke smaak.

Collage gift for a girl / Collage pop als kadootje voor een meid!

I have been such a lousy blogger the last couple of weeks. Normally I would have some time during the day but lately it has been busy and hectic and then blogging is not my main priority. But now DD Jinte is taking a nap, DS Joram is in school so I have 15 minutes (then I will be picking up Joram again) to do some blogging.

I was thinking about posting a tutorial about creating a background with tissuepaper but since I only have 15 minutes I'll do that this weekend.

Doing the tissuepaper beackground technique was one of the things I have wanted to do forever and never got around to it. Then there was this great challenge at Let's Scrap and one of the things I had to do was using a new (new to me) technique. Well, I did. Again, I will post about that this weekend.

Something else I always wanted to try was to make a collage doll with a pic as the head. I know I am not such a good 'collage girl' so I never really tried. But this week Nicole's DD Renée turned eight and I thought it was a great reason to try and actually do it! And I must admit it was so much fun to do and I was so pleased with the final result. But then you never know what a child will think about it (they could very well be thinking that's it's a weird looking thing with those long pink arms and legs) I decided not to wrap it so DS Joram could take a look at it in the morning and be the judge of it. He took a look at it and was hooked! he wanted one too. So I wrapped it and gave it to Renée. Thank goodness she also loved it!

Ik ben niet zo'n hele trouwe blogger geweest de afgelopen weken. normaal gesproken heb ik overdag nog wel eens tijd om te bloggen maar het is de laatse tijd druk en hectisch geweest en dan snap je dat bloggen niet echt mijn eerste prioriteit heeft. Maar Jinte slaapt nu en Joram zit op school en ik heb nu een kwartiertje (dan moet ik Joram weer ophalen) om even te bloggen. Ik wilde eigenlijk een tutorial plaatsen over het maken van een achtergrond met vloeipapier maar daar heb ik toch echt meer tijd voor nodig dan een kwartiertje. Dat doe ik dus dit weekend.

Een achtergrond van vloeipapier maken was een techniek die ik altijd al eens een keer heb willen proberen maar eigenlijk nooit aan toegekomen ben. Op Let's Scrap was er een challenge en die hield onder andere in dat je een nieuwe techniek (nieuw voor mij) ging toepassen en dat was dus de ideale gelegenheid om het eindelijk eens te doen. Nogmaals; dit weekend laat ik het je weten.

Iets anders wat ik al altijd heb willen doen was het maken van een collage pop met een foto van een hoofd. Ik weet dat ik niet echt een 'collagemaker' ben, dus heb mezelf er nooit aan gewaagd. Afgelopen week werd Nicole's dochter Renée acht jaar en ik vond dat dat een hele goede reden was om het nu eindelijk eens te doen. Ik moet toegeven dat het geweldig leuk was om te doen en ik was heel erg tevreden met het uiteindelijke resultaat. Maar omdat je nooit weet wat kinderen van iets vinden had ik het niet ingepakt zodat Joram kon oordelen of het 'echt' leuk was. Voor hetzelfde geldt denken ze dat het een raar uitziend ding is met die lange glitter armen en benen. Joram keek ernaar en vond het helemaal geweldig. Hij wil er ook eentje! Dus heb ik het ingepakt en aan Renée gegeven. En ook zij vond het gelukkig helemaal leuk.
