Merry Christmas my friends!

Just a quick post to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a joyfull, happy and healthy 2011 for you and your loved ones. Now getting back to Christmas dinner and watching the Beethoven movie with DS Joram.

This is my first ever white Christmas in this little country of ours. And we are talking WHITE! There's about 12" of snow here and there is more to come.

Card sketch Wednesday at Let's Scrap

Every third week a card sketch is posted at Let's Scrap. Even though cards are not my thing I thought with Christmas coming up it would be kind of handy to make some cards. Most of the times I transform the card sketch into a layout. But not this time. And when I see all the others cards that the DT made flying by in the gallery, I know why I usually don't make cards...............

I used Bo Bunny's Christmas line from last year. Love a ll the non-traditional colors and the playful details.

Paper Wreath tutorial

If you arrived here from The Scrap Shoppe: Welcome to my tutorial for this years Home Made Christmas.

This would be a great home decor item for Christmas but leaving the Christmas wish behind, it would make a great all year round wreath. What about putting 'welcome' on there and hanging it on your front door? (Just make sure it won't get wet.....................)

I made this and I was amazed about how easy this was and how good the final result. I am going to try and explain to you how to make this. This is what you need:

• Styrofoam wreath (mine was about 8" diameter)
• Old book (I used a paperback book)
• Pins (regular or short ones, does not really matter)
• Ink for the edges
• Ribbon

You don't really need the following items but you can if you want to spice it up:

• A decoration piece for in the wreath (I used a wooden star about the size of the inner opening of the wreath, this can be your guideline for buying))
• Glitter spray (there's probably tons of people that would say you can't, but I used glitter hairspray, I use it all the time on projects and never damaged anything and it is a frugal option)

You start with tearing pages out of your book. Don't try and do it to neatly, but do make sure you still have whole pages. I started with 50 pages and I could not really tell you how much I used in the end but you can always take more out or throw the leftovers in the waste paper (or your fire place, ha!)

Then ink the sides of your pages. Again: Don't try and do it to neat. This is a great project to let go of your perfectionism, I had a hard time with it and at the same time lots of fun.....

When you have some pages inked you can started attaching them to the wreath. I used those tiny needles that you use for decorating, but you can use whatever you have lying around. Well, as long as they don't come out the other side of your wreath I guess...................)

The hardest thing for me to explain is how to fold the pages. I tried to take pics of it, but it is always hard to takes pics of the entire process.

You start by folding your pages over lenghtwise BUT: don't really fold/crease it! You just sort of put it together without really folding it (this does not really sound too good does it? I just hope the pics are more clear than I am). When you are done folding attach it to the wreath as showed in the pic. This will be your first layer. There are three layers in total. Use as much pins as neccesary to keep the papers in place. Mine has two, sometimes three.

This might be handy to mention: Most of my pics were taken from the back of the wreath. For me it was the handiest to work on the back too, but I guess that is all up to you!

You keep putting pages on until your first layer is completely filled. Thep aged overlap a little about a 1/3" or so. Again, don't be to precise, it can be half an inch on the one and 1/4 on the other one. 

When your first layer is done we keep on moving to the second layer: This layer will be placed about two inches lower than the first one. I swear I took pictured from starting the firstl ayer too but I can't find them anywhere so you will have to do it with the pic of when the second layer is on. You can see in the pic that the second layer is much lower than the first. Again: don;t measure anything, just do it by sight. Trustm e, it will work out great. When your second layer is done the back of your wreath will look like this:

And this will be the front: Again you can see that my pages are not lined up at all. How are we doing with letting perfectionism go?

If you are still with me here you are doing great, we are almost done. We are now starting the third layer. This layer will will placed overtop of the firstl ayer but than facing the other way (so outside the wreath) This will make your wreath look fuller and cover up any of the styrofoam that was still visible after the first two layers. The pic will show you where about to place the third layer and what it will look like when you're done (again: from the back)

At this point your wreath is done and you can start decorating. You don't have to if you like it like this and you can use whatever you like to decorate it. If you decide to leave it like this you will only have to attach to ribbon to hang it. I used three different kinds of ribbon and fibers and placed them just around the wreath on top and bottom.

This is what I did with the star: I inked the edges with the same color ink I used for the pages and cut a shape with my Silhouette and adhered it to the star. You can use stickers, chipboard or whatever you like on it. Just look at it like a little canvas.

I attached the star with the twine that came with it but you can use whatever twine or ribbon that you like. This is what my wreath looks like.

Home made Christmas card with punches

I posted this card way back but wanted to post it again because I still like it and with time of Christmas wishes ahead I thought some of you might need an idea. This was such an easy card to make and the final result is really cute.

The pics that I am posting are a bit out of focus but since the card was sent to someone I have no possibility to take different pics. So, you will have to do it with what you get, ha!

Let me try and explain how I made this card: I started with a square pice of cardstock as a mat for my angel. I used my border scissors (can you imagine not having border punches?????) to cut the edges of the square. Then I punched two hearts, a little star and a circle with my Quickutz. But you can easily use normal punches or your Silhouette or Cricut. Whatever you have. In ancient times I probably would have cut them by hand............. The two smallest circles come out of a regular office hole puncher. 

You put the hearts behind the biggest circle with the point underneath the circle. When you look at the pic you will know what I mean. 

I used the two little circles for cheeks but you can also use a marker or chalk for that. I made the eyes and mouth with a black marker. The words are rub-ons from Making Memories but can also be replaced by stamps or even a printed text from your computer. 

I attached the angel with  foam dots so she would pop up a little. To top it of you can use some glitter spray or glimmer mist to make her sparkle!

Some family updates: DS Joram (now in 4th grade) had to do his book report today. He was sooooo nervous he even woke up last night crying . As most of you know Joram has a severe dyslexia so anything reading or spelling is one big disaster. Because of his dyslexia he did not have to read out loud in front of his class (which goes with the book report) but he could video tape it and play it in his class. He decided to read himself in front of his class. I was so proud of him when he decided that (well, at 3 am he wasn't to sure about that anymore, but you can imagine I was not going to video tape at that point......) And because he practised the part he was going to read over and over he knew it by head and 'reading' should not be a problem at all.

And the final result was: He got a B! I was soo proud of him! He said he was really nervous when he did it and even his book was shaking in his hands when he was reading. But no matter what: He said he had fun and he wanted to do one again.

And when I put him to bed tonight he said this: Mommy, I think they made a mistake when they said I am dyslexic, I had no problems today with reading.................... I did not argue with him and he fell asleep with a smile on his face..............................

I want to wish you a very merry Christmas and all the best for 2010. 2009 has been a very moving year; We had a second child after 8-and-a-half years. I can not tell you how much fun it is to have two children so far apart. Joram adores his little sister.

I got more and more readers and followers on my blog; It is so much fun to get to know people from all over the world just because they found your blog and comment on your posts. I got some new friends this year! Keep those comments coming, I love every one of them.

Scrapping has been fun this year. I love to scrap and love to do something with my creativity (and all those thousands of pics that I shoot every year). I hope you all like what I make.

I used the files to make a Christmas card for overseas family and friends. It was my first try on going digi. I just love the feel of paper, so no digi scrapping for me.

Ik wil iedereen een hele fijne kerst wensen en het alle goeds voor 2010. 2009 was voor ons een heel bewogen jaar: Na acht-en-een-half jaar werd Jinte geboren! Ik kan je niet vertellen hoe leuk het is om twee kinderen te hebben die zoveel in leeftijd schelen. Joram adoreert zijn kleine zusje.

Ook kreeg ik steeds meer lezers en volgers op mijn blog. Het is zo geweldig om mensen van over de hele wereld te leren kennen omdat ze je blog gevonden hebben en een commentaar achterlaten. Ik heb er heel wat vrienden bijgekregen afgelopen jaar. Blijf berichtjes plaatsen, ik vindt ze stuk voor stuk geweldig!

Scrappen was heerlijk dit jaar. Ik vind het geweldig om iets met mijn creativiteit te doen (en al die duizenden foto's die ik ieder jaar weer schiet). Ik hoop dat jullie mijn creaties leuk vinden.

Nogmaals: Het allerbeste voor iedereen, mijn lezers, mijn vrienden en mijn familie.

Ik heb de bestanden gebruikt om een kerstkaart te maken voor familie en vrienden in het buitenland. Ik hou toch mee van het 'spelen' met papier, dus een digitale scrapper zal ik nooit worden.

Our tree is up! / Onze boom staat!

It took us half our day but it's there and we're pretty content: Our Christmas tree! Joram was so eager to set up the tree but I ended doing it by myself while he was doing other stuff. We started at 8 in the morning and were not finished until 2. I did not buy anything extra for the tree this year so nothing more had to go in there (like it's not packed enough anyway, LOL)

There's quite some angels in our tree (even the tree topper is an angel). I have this thing with angels and somehow I feel that angels NEED to be in the Christmas tree.

Last year DH Richard bought an artificial tree. People kept saying: I can't believe that a Canadian is buying a 'fake' tree. I miss the whole process of buying a tree, but I love the fact that the tree is sturdy no matter what heavy stuff you put in there. And we have quite some heavy ornaments in there.

Since this weekend the weather is getting colder and there's even snow in the forecast. Not like there's any chance on having a white Cristmas, our last white Christmas we had in 1981.

My BFF Marjan had the H1N1 flu and is now getting better so we'll be scrapping tonight! Talking about the H1N1 flu; Joram and myself will be getting our second vaccination tomorrow..............

Something else about Christmas: I love to read the Scrapbook & Cards Today magazine and blog and they have some awesome giveaways this holiday season. Beside that they have the cutest Christmas projects posted. I love the cards that the DT made with kids hand prints. You can see them HERE.

Het heeft een halve dag geduurd, maar nu staat ie er dan weer: Onze kerstboom! Joram wilde zo graag de boom opzetten maar uiteindelijk heb ik het helemaal alleen gedaan terwijl hij andere dingen aan het doen was. We zijn om 8 uur 's ochtends begonnen en we waren pas om twee uur klaar. Ik heb dit jaar geen nieuwe dingen voor in de boom gekocht dus meer hoefde er ook niet in (alsof de boom al niet vol genoeg hangt, hahaha) Er hangen aardig wat engelen in de boom. Ik heb iets met engelen en vind dat er engelen in de kerstboom MOETEN hangen.

Vorig jaar heeft manlief Richard een kunstboom gekocht. Mensen om ons heen zeiden: Hoe kan een Canadees nou een kunstboom kopen. Ik mis het hele ritueel van een boom uitzoeken maar het geweldige aan een kunstboom is dat je er hele zware dingen in kan hangen zonder dat je boom uit 'model' raakt. En we hebben nogal wat zware dingen in de boom hangen.

Sinds dit weekend wordt het kouder en er wordt zelfs sneeuw verwacht. We zullen maar niet rekenen op een witte kerst. Ik las gisteren dat we voor het laatst een witte kerst hadden in 1981.

Mijn vriendin Marjan had de Mexicaanse griep maar is nu aan de beterende hand en we gaan vanavond scrappen. Over de Mexicaanse griep gesproken: Joram en ik moeten morgen onze tweede vaccinatie halen...........

Made some Christmas cards / Een paar kerstkaarten gemaakt

This week I found some time to make some Christmas cards. Every year I have the intention to make all my cards but I never find the time to actually do so. At the end I have made about five cards. There's always one special card for my BFF Marjan. I am going to get killed by her if I send her a store bought card............... I kept it very simple and that really helped the process. I already told you this before: I am NOT a card maker.

Other than that we had a very busy week. Jinte has to go to the pediatrician for her diet. Forcing her back to hypo allergenic formula did not help her (sometimes children will get over de lactose/lactase intolerance after a few weeks of special diet formula) so now we have to go through the fuss of getting to the hospital, getting a special diet (normally she would be getting first meals by now) and learning all about food ingredients.

Richard has to work tomorrow and Joram and myself will be putting up the tree. (Richard is swearing as we speak while taking all the decorations down, poor guy) Enjoy the weekend!

Afgelopen week heb ik de tijd gevonden om een paar kerstkaarten te maken. Ieder jaar neem ik me voor om al mijn kaarten zelf te maken maar ik maak er nooit tijd voor en uiteindelijk heb ik er maar een handvol zelfgemaakt. Er is altijd een speciale kaart voor mijn beste vriendin Marjan. Zij zou me vermoorden als ik haar geen zelfgemaakte kaart zou sturen.............

Ik heb het dit jaar erg simpel gehouden en dat vergemakkelijkte wel het proces. Ik heb het al eerder gezegd: Ik ben GEEN kaartenmaker.

Verder hadden we een erg drukke week. Jinte moet naar de kinderarts voor haar voeding. Het terugforceren naar hypoallergene voeding had niet het gewenste resultaat (sommige kinderen zijn over hun lactose/lactase intolerantie heen na een paar weken dieetvoeding) Dus nu moeten de molen in van het ziekenhuis, een speciaal dieet (ze zou nu al bijvoeding moeten krijgen) en heel veel warenkennis over voeding en hun ingredienten.

Richard moet morgen werken en Joram en ik gaan de boom optuigen (Richard is nu aan het schelden omdat hij alle dozen met kerstspullen naar beneden moet brengen, arme ziel) Geniet van het weekend!

Somehow it is very hard to pick up a Christmas tree when your car is in the garage. But yesterday morning I came down and Joram and Richard had picked up a tree (the car is brandnew again). And you know what: It was an artificial tree! I would never ever thought that we would be the owner of a artificial Christmas tree! Richard comes from Christmas tree country where you cut down your own tree (Canada, for those who did not know) and I always said I would never have an artificial one. But over the years we had the true Christmas tree experiences: the trees are amazingly expensive, they loose their needles after two days so by the time it's New Years Eve your tree is butt naked, and they are never as pretty as you thought they were when you bought it. So we spend the whole day putting the tree together and decorating it. And I must confess: It is the prettiest tree we have ever had. Even though none of the ornaments are alike, nothing fits together and there are the most hiddious ones between them, I love our tree! All the heavy ornaments I used to put in are actually staying on the spot I gave it and do not make the tree hang over. I am so happy with our tree. I also decorated our hall and stairs so we are all ready for Christmas! Joram has a Christmas dinner at school this coming thursday. They do it every year and the theme is always the same: Share together, eat together. Everybody brings something ot eat and the children are having dinner together with their teacher. All the kids are dressed up and Joram even put on clothes this morning to see what he was going to wear for the dinner. And the day after his Christmas break starts. Now let's just hope for some Christmassy weather!

Weet je dat het heel moeilijk is om een kerstboom te kopen als je auto in de garage staat? Maar gisterenochtend kwam ik beneden en toen hadden Richard en Joram samen een kerstboom gekocht! (de auto is weer helemaal de oude) En raad eens: Het was een kunstboom! Ik had echt nooit gedacht dat wij nog eens de trotse eigenaren zouden worden van een echte kunstboom. Richard komt uit hetl and van de houthakkers waar je nog zelf je eigen kerstboom om mag zagen en ik heb altijd gezegd dat ik geen kunstboom wilde. Maar in de afgelopen jaren hebben we alle 'echte' kerstboomervaringen wel meegemaakt: ze zijn schreeuwend duur en woirden iederjaar weer duurder, na twee dagen beginnen er al naalden af te vallen dus tegen de tijd dat het Oudejaarsavond is zit je met een kale boom. En op een of andere manier is die boom thuis nooit zo mooi als dat ie leek toen je hem kocht. Dus gisteren zijn we de hele dag bezig geweest met het in elkaar zetten en het versieren van de boom. En ik ben de eerste die het toegeeft: Het is absoluut de mooiste boom die we ooit gehad hebben! Zelfs met al die versieringen waarvan er niet eentje gelijk is, niets past bij elkaar en er zitten zelfs hele lelijke dingen tussen. Ik vind het geweldig! Voorheen bleven de zware dingen die ik perse in de boom wilde hebben nooit hangen en zorgden ervoor dat de hele boom scheef hing of stond. Ik heb de hal en de trap ook versierd dus wij zijn helemaal klaar voor de kerst. Aankomende donderdag heeft Joram kerstdiner op school. Dit is een jaarlijks terugkerend festijn waar de kinderen zelf meegenomen (en liefst zelfgemaakte) hapjes mee naar school nemen en daar met elkaar eten onder het motto: Samen delen, samen eten. Alle kinderen hebben hun nette kleren aan en Joram die heeft vanmorgen zelfs al aangeprobeerd wat hij bij het diner aan zou kunnen. En de dag daarna begint de kerstvakantie. Nu alleen nog een beetje kerstachtig weer!

Christmas Cards / Kerstkaarten

Every year I promise myself to start making Christmas cards on time. But it never works out that way! A long time ago I decided to only send cards to meaningful people. So it's not about breaking the 'Who send the most Chrostmas cards' record. Yesterdday evening I started making them. That is an achievement to begin with because there were years where I only made one card (for Marjan, our yearly Christmas tradition) and put it in her mailbox at Christmas eve. I made it not too complicated this year and made all the same cards (except for Marjans, she is getting a special one) I started working with Nestabilities, ribbon and Distress ink and I am pretty content with the final result. Now they only have to go in the mail!

Ieder jaar neem ik me voor om vroeg te beginnen met het maken van kerstkaarten. Maar ieder jaar lukt dat niet. Ik heb al heel lang geleden besloten om alleen kerstkaarten te sturen aan mensen aan mensen die me dierbaar zijn en dus niet alleen maar kerstkaarten te sturen om het record 'Wie heeft de meeste kerstkaarten verstuurd?' te verbeteren. Gisterenavond ben ik begonnen met met maken van kerstkaarten. Dat is op zich al een hele prestatie want er zijn jaren bij dat ik er maar eentje maakte (en dan voor Marjan, want dat is onze traditie) en die dan op kerstavond nog even snel bij haar in de bus gooide. Ik besloot om het dit jaar niet zo heel ingewikkeld te maken en voor iedereen dezelfde kaarten te maken (behalve dan weer voor Marjan, want die krijgt een bijzondere). Ik ben aan de slag gegaan met de Nestablilities, lint en Distress inkt en het resultaat mag er wezen! Nu nog op de post!

Veel foto's?????

Ik heb altijd al heel veel foto's genomen en door de jaren heen zijn dat er alleen maar meer geworden. Vroeger plakte ik trouw alles in fotoalbums, maar sinds ik scrap zijn de stapels met foto's alleen maar hoger geworden. Ik kan zeggen dat ik duizenden niet ingeplakte foto's heb liggen (en dan overdrijf ik echt niet) Alleen al in onze afgelopen zomervakantie in Italie heb ik meer dan 700 foto's genomen. Maar goed, komt tijd komt raad............

Zolang ik layouts blijf maken met maar 1 foto erop zullen mijn stapels alleen maar groter worden. Tijd voor een adere aanpak, maar tot die tijd.........

Hier een layout van een foto van Joram en mijzelf gemaakt op tweede kerstdag 2007. We kijken geen van tweeen naar de camera, maar toch een mooie foto geworden. Verder heel simpel...........

I always have been taking tons of pictures and through the years that became more and more. I use to put those in albums every time but ever since I started scrapping those piles of pictures keep on growing. I can honstly say I have thousands of pictures lying around (And not over reacting on this one) You can imagine those piles when I tell you that on our last summer vacation in Tuscany I already took over 700 pics.
But as long as I keep making layouts with only one picture on there........ I think it will be time for a different approach. Until then............

Soms heb je van die foto's die van simpelheid geweldig zijn. De foto op deze layout is er zo eentje. Hij is gemaakt op tweede kerstdag als Joram lekker bij mijn moeder zit. Een geweldige foto. Inspiratie voor de layout komt van een layout in de Two Peas in a Bucket gallerij.

Sometimes you take a picture that's simple and perfect. The pic on this layout qualifies for that. The pic was taken on Boxing Day when Joram is sitting by my mom. I got the inspiration from a layout in the Two Peas in a Bucket gallery.

Het is weer voorbij.....

Vandaag alweer derde kerstdag zoals we dat zo mooi noemen. Een dag om uit te buiken, kliekjes te eten en bij te komen van de feestdagen. Onze kerst was geslaagd. Er waren veel kadootjes, lekker eten en weer veel om over na te denken. Een witte kerst hebben we ook dit jaar niet gehad, maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken. Een aantal dagen ervoor hadden we immers de mooiste witte wereld die je je kon bedenken.

Kerstkaart van Marjan

Dit was in ieder geval onze eerste zelfgemaakte kerstkaart van dit jaar (op de fotokerstkaarten na) en we kregen hem van Marjan en Pieter (en Zoe natuurlijk...........). Ieder jaar nemen Marjan en ik ons voor om zelf onze kerstkaarten te maken maar beginnen er vervolgens weer veel te laat aan en het ontbreekt ons dan aan alle nodige inspiratie. Meestal komt het er op neer dat we elk 1 kerstkaart maken (voor elkaar) en verder niet. Volgens mij hadden we dit jaar een goedj aar. Ik had een kaart of zeven en Marjan denk ik ook. De kaart die ik gemaakt heb ben ik natuurlijk weer vergeten te fotograferen (moest snel snel in de bus!)

Mijn zelfgemaakte kerstkaarten zijn verschenen op Scrapscene!!!!!!!! Voor de a-scrappers onder ons: ScrapScene is een van de grootste weblogs die de ScrapScene volgt. Bijna alles over scrappen is hier te vinden. En nu dus mijn kerstkaarten ook. Ik moet zeggen: Ben best wel een beetje trots op mezelf!

De Wijzen uit het Oosten

Joram en zijn klas hebben gisterenochtend een toneelstuk opgevoerd voor de hele school (nou ja, groep 3 tot en met 8. Groep 1 en 2 zitten immers op een andere lokatie) Natuurlijk was de inhoud van het toneelstuk het kerstverhaal. Er waren echter zo veel ouders die ook het toneelstuk wilden zien dat het vanmorgen om 11.30 uur nogmaals voor de ouders werd opgevoerd. Er waren een aantal aanpassingen: Er was al een Wijze op vakantie en het kerstdecor was al afgebroken met de kerstvakantie in zicht. Er waren dus maar twee Wijzen :) uit het Oosten. Joram was eerst herder maar werd uiteindelijk een Wijze omdat de oorspronkelijke wijze bij de opvoering niet op school was. Als herder had hij wel 1 regel tekst als Wijze hoefde hij alleen maar cadeautjes uit te delen. Hieronder een conversatie die we laatst aan tafel voerden

• Ik: Ben je nu geen Herder meer?


• Joram: Nee, want ~~~~ is donderdag niet op school. Nu ben ik een Wijze


• Ik: Wat moet je zeggen als Wijze?


• Joram: Niets, je moet alleen cadeautjes uitdelen
  
• Ik: Wat voor cadeautjes?


• Joram: Goud, Mirre en Zeewier!

Gelukkig dat hij dat niet hoefde te zeggen! Maar niettemin was het vanmorgen een geweldig toneelstuk. Het maakte helemaal niet uit dat er een Wijze op vakantie was en het decor al weg was. De kinderen deden het geweldig en alle ouders hebben genoten!
