Another texture layout!

In my last post I was talking about this great challenge DT member Kathy posted over at Let's Scrap. Well, I really got into it and did another one. I have scrapped this photo before but I had another print and since I love this photo I thought it would not hurt ot scrpa it again. The pic was taken in Tuscany, Italy in 2007 on the estate we were staying. The little lake was filled with fish and toads. Loved hearing the concert of the toads early in the morning and when it got dark. We had such a good time there!

I splashed ink on the cardstock with a paintbrush and dripped seal wax on it. Used a piece of fringed burlap as a mat and made my own seal. Too bad the text on the seal is hard to read. It says: Official, accept no other. Even though this is not my regular style I love how it turned out!

Sketch Wednesday at Let's Scrap

As you will know by now: Wednesday is the day that a new sketch gets revealed at Let's Scrap. I really had a difficult time with this one. Not so much with the sketch but with the layout I was making with it. I used one of those Prima Marketing stud swirls and I ended up with a pile of sticky studs all tangled up. I guess my neighbours could have heard me............... But one of my Let's Scrap friends, Kathy, gave me this tip that she got at CKC: Cut them up into managable parts and then put them on your project. Thanks for the tip Kathy!

This pic I used for this layout was takien by my DH Richard when we were in Rovinj (Croatia) last May. He and DS Joram were climbing a church tower and this is the view they had from up there. I was enjoying the inside of the church (I think it was even a cathedral) with DD Jinte.

A homemade tote and planner / Een zelfgemaakte tas en agenda

For all my Canadian and American readers: I hope you had a great Labour Day! As for us: We arrived safely into our little country last Thursday and I can tell you: It is good to be home again! Yesterday school started again and DS Joram was a bit nervous even though he had Miss Esther before in First Grade. He came home for lunch (kids do not have lunch at school here) very relaxed, so that was a good sign. I can not believe that he is in Grade 4 already. Back to our normal lives again.

Joram did not have any major issues getting used to the time change (Toronto Canada is 6 hours behind) DD Jinte has a lot more problems with it. Her entire biological clock is messed up and she did not yet sleep through the night.

At the end of last school year I made a tote for Joram to use at school. He wanted something no one else would have. So the nutty mom did it again and made him one. I got my inspiration at Craftster and just started it. I was really content with the final outcome but would do the felt mouth different next time. It moves when you sew, next time I have to glue it on before sewing.

Because we would be in Canada for almost six weeks I wanted to do the school supplies shopping before the vacation started (we only have six weeks summer vacation here). This would be the first year Joram needs a planner. But as usual: Joram wanted something different than the others. Geeh, it is going to sound familiar........

It has been a long time since I shopped for school supplies but I was amazed about the collection of planners they have. But most of them are for girls and for boys you only have the 'tough' series like Harley Davidson and Ed Hardy. Not really planners Joram would have liked. So I got the idea of making his planner in the same style as his tote. It was a lot easier than making the tote. This one only took 30 minutes. He already got a lot of compliments over both his bag and his planner.

Wij zijn afgelopen donderdag weer thuisgekomen uit Canada en ik moet zeggen: Het is heerlijk om weer thuis te zijn. School is gisteren weer gestart en Joram was toch weer een beetje nerveus. Toch had hij Juf Esther in groep 3 ook gehad. Hij kwam tussen de middag thuis en was volledig ontspannen: Een goed teken dus! Ik kan bijna niet geloven dat ie alweer in groep 6 zit. Terug naar het gewone leven!

Joram heeft niet veel moeite gehad met het tijdsverschil (In Canada is het 6 uur vroeger), maar Jinte des te meer. Jinte haar biologische klok is helemaal in de war en ze slaapt 's nachts nog steeds niet door.

Aan het einde van afgelopen schooljaar heb ik voor Joram een schooltas gemaakt. Hij wilde iets anders dan alle anderen en wat die die moeder van hem? Die maakte er eentje voor hem. Ik heb mijn inspiratie gevonden op Crafster en ben gewoon aan de slag gegaan. Ik was erg tevreden met het eindresultaat al zal ik volgende keer het vilt toch anders doen. Het vilt gaat schuiven als je het naait dus moet je dat er eerst op lijmen.

Omdat we zes weken naar Canada zouden gaan wilde ik alle schoolspullen voor Joram al voor de zomervakantie in huis hebben. Dit jaar hebben ze voor het eerst een echte agenda nodig en Joram wilde iets anders dan anders. Goh, dat klinkt inmiddels bekend! Ik ging op zoek naar schoolagenda's en heb me verbaasd over de enorme collectie die er tegenwoordig is (het was al lang geleden dat ik voor schoolspullen heb gewinkeld) Het overgrote deel van de agenda's is toch echt voor meiden en voor de jongens zijn er alleen maar de geijkte thema's als Harley Davidson en Ed Hardy. Beiden onderwerpen waar Joram nu niet echt warm of koud van wordt. Dus kwam ik op het idee om zijn agenda in dezelfde stijl te maken als zijn tas. Dat was een stuk makkelijker en kostte beduidend minder tijd: Na 30 minuten was ik klaar! Hij heeft al veel complimentjes gehad over zijn tas en zijn agenda.

Ik hoop deze week in ieder geval te scrappen dus hou het in de gaten!

Mennonites in St. Jacobs

Yesterday we have visited St. Jacobs (Ontario) where lots of Mennonites still live in the early days. I have been there before (actually twice) but DH Richard had never been there. It is really fascinating to see all those people dressing and living like it was hundreds of years ago. For example: They do not use cars as transportation but still horses and carts. They have a great farmers market where they sell their produce (which looks so good) and their homemade products like crafts, pies, cookies and bread. We found DD Jinte some good bread! We had a lot of trouble with finding good bread for Jinte with her allergies (she seemed to be very troubles by all the (chemical) additives in the Canadian bread) and I was so glad to finally have found bread with no dairy, eggs, seeds and additives.

Other than that there's has come a lot of tourism to St. Jacobs and therefor also a lot of commerce. In the city of St. Jacobs you see hardly any Mennonites. We were lucky enough to see a horse auction and I was able to shoot some nice pics. It felt kind of akward to take photographs of 'regular' people but I could not resist. I never wanted to offend them so I was really careful with my camera. I even asked a Mennonite lady about taking pictures. She said that they would not pose but they are used to people shooting photo's of them.

We bought the greatest buttertarts and pumpkin pie there.

When we arrived in Canada five weeks ago DD Jinte had two teeth but now she already has seven. I has really changed her way of eating and she really bites and chews on all her food. Today we went out for lunch and she had a blast eating watermelon. Ofcourse that gave me some really good pics again. (I made 1400 so far, embarassed, embarassed)

Gisteren zijn we naar St. Jacobs (Ontario) geweest waar nog steeds heel veel Mennonieten leven. Ik was er al eerder geweest (twee keer zelfs) maar manlief Richard nog nooit. Het is fascinerend om te zien hoe de Mennonieten nog steeds leven zoals er eeuwen terug geleefd werd. Ze maken bijvoorbeeld geen gebruik van auto's maar nog steeds van paard en wagen. Ze hebben in St. Jacobs een hele grote markt waar zij hun producten van eigen land verkopen maar ook dingen die ze zelf gemaakt hebben zoals taarten, brood en handwerk. We hebben de afgelopen weken veel problemen gehad met het vinden van het juiste brood voor Jinte. Ze lijkt heel veel last te hebben van alle (chemische) toevoegingen in het brood hier. En op deze markt verkochten ze brood zonder melkproducten, eieren, noten en toevoegingen! Je kan je voorstellen hoe blij ik daar mee was.

Behalve alle toeristen is de commercie in de afgelopen tijd ook toegeslagen in St. Jacobs. In het stadje zelf zie je nauwelijks Mennonieten. Wij hadden geluk dat we langs een paardenveiling kwamen waar de Mennonieten paarden kochten en verkochten. Natuurlijk wilde ik een paar foto's van ze maken. Het voelde een beetje ongemakkelijk om foto's te nemen van 'gewone' mensen. Ik wilde natuurlijk niemand tegen mij in het harnas jagen dus was erg voorzichtig met mijn camera. Ik heb zelfs aan een Mennonietse (of zoiets) vrouw gevraagd hoe het zit met foto's maken. Zij vertelde dat ze absoluut niet willen poseren maar dat ze inmiddels wel gewend zijn aan het feit dat mensen foto's van ze maken.

We hebben nog de meest lekkere butter tarts en pompoentaart gekocht. Butter tarts zijn een typische Canadese lekkernij die al dateren uit het begin van 1900.

Toen we vijf weken geleden in Canada aankwamen had Jinte twee tanden en inmiddels heeft ze er zeven. Het heeft haar manier van eten helemaal veranderd en ze kauwt en bijt nu op al het voedsel dat er in haar mond terecht komt. Vanmiddag hebben we buiten de deur geluncht en ze heeft zich tegoed gedaan aan watermeloen. Ze bleef eten! Je snapt dat dat weer leuke foto's heeft opgeleverd (ik heb er tot nu toe 1400 gemaakt, schaam schaam)

Fun at Wasaga Beach

Again we spend a couple of days at my inlaws beach house in Wasaga beach. There was not so much wind so DD Jinte was able to enjoy the water. The great thing is that the water is real shallow so the kids can go in without a problem. Jinte did not want to come out if the water and when we got her out she started screaming.

Today we visited Saint Marie among the Hurons. It is a recreated 17th century Jesuit Mission site. There's a lot to see and to do. DD Joram got a made hook from the blach smith, made his own oki (a good luck charm made from clay to get rid of the bad spirits. The Huron believed that everything, including the things they made, had a soul and was immortal. A soul having the power to influence human beings is called oki, and because it controlled the seasons and other natural phenomena, the oki of the sky was considered the most powerful. ) and made his own candle. The weather was good (and has been the last four weeks) so it was a joy to walk around.

And no, I did not forget: the pics from Joram and myself with the experiment of the static electritiy in the Science Centre.

En weer hebben een paar dagen doorgebracht in het strandhuis van mijn schoonouders in Wasaga Beach. Er stond deze keer maar weinig wind zodat Jinte ook heerlijk van het water heeft kunnen genieten. Dat heeft ze dan ook gedaan want toen we haar eruit wilden halen zette ze het op een schreeuwen. Het water is er erg ondiep en loopt heel langzaam af dus het is er heel veilig voor de kinderen.

Vandaag zijn we naar Saint Marie among the Hurons geweest, een nagebouwde missiepost van de Franse Jezuiten in de 17e eeuw. Er is heel veel te zien en te doen. Joram heeft van de smid een zelfgemaakte haak gekregen, een kaars gemaakt en zelf een oki (een geluksbeeldje dat slechte geesten wegjaagt. De Hurons geloofden dat alles, inclusief gemaakte dingen een ziel had en invloed had op de mensen. Ze noemden dit oki. De oki van de lucht was het meest krachtig omdat deze de seizoenen en het weer beinvloedde.) gemaakt. Het weer was prima (het is de laatste vier weken niet anders geweest) dus het was heerlijk om er rond te lopen.

En nee, ik ben niet de foto's van Joram en mijzelf met de proef van de statische elektriciteit in het Science Centre niet vergeten.

Ontario Science Centre, Toronto

The other day DH, Joram and myself spent a day at the Ontario Science Centre. DD Jinte stayed with my inlaws so we could have some time with the three of us and she could have fun with grandma and grandpa. The Science Centre is a great place with some great exhibitions and there's lots of interactive stuff to do for both parents and children.

One other great thing was the Harry Potter exhibition. DS Joram has been a Harry Potter fan ever since he and DH read the books and watch a few of the movies. As for me, Harry Potter does not really excites me too much but it was reallly great to see that tons and tons of people are (Though I think ity is still funny to see an adult with Harry Potter glasses). At he exhibit they show all the real movie props. It is really cool to see the car from the Weasleys and Harry's wand and different outfits that he wore in the movies. Joram was picked out of the audience and got to wear the sorting hat, he was chosen to be a Griffyndor. But there was one dissapointing thing: It was not allowed to take any pictures of some sort. So I missed out on some great shot there. Guess I will have to use the Warner Brothers images to scrap.......................

In the store he got a pair of Harry glasses, a wand and a time turner with a set of stickers. Way too much money for some souvenirs. But alas, this was a unique experience for him. Joram loved the glasses and even wore them during the Imax movie.

Another great thing was the Science arcade in the Science Centre. I think every child (and probably every adult) loves the static electricity experiment. Again Joram was chosen from the audience and was the one who had to show his hair blown into the air. Really cool to see (and thank goodness I could shoot some shots there!). At the end all the people in the audience could also experience the experiment and Joram wanted to go again but now together with me. Who am I to say no????? Well, I guess I should have thought about that twice. My hair really seemed to like the experiment and was announced the best one of that day. I wasn't really waiting for that kind of attention. And yes: I will show some photo's of that in this post...........SOMEHOW BLOGGER DOES NOT LET ME UPLOAD PHOTO'S, I PROMISE I WILL POST THEM LATER.

Joram was exhausted and fell asleep during our drive home. Needless to say that we had a great day and that DD Jinte had a great day too. 

Tomorrow is the start of the weeekend, all have a good one!

Een paar dagen geleden zijn manlief, Joram en ikzelf naar het Ontario Science Centre in Toronto geweest. Jinte bleef bij mijn schoonouders zodat ze een dagje gezellig met opa en oma kon doorbrengen. Het Science Centre is echt helemaal geweldig, er is heel veel te zien en heel veel te doen wat leuk is voor zowel kinderen als ouders.  

Ze hebben er nu een tentoonstelling over Harry Potter en dat vond Joram natuurlijk helemaal geweldig. Hij is fan sinds hij samen met manlief Richard de boeken heeft gelezen en een aantal films heeft gezien. Ikzelf ben geen superfan van Harry Potter maar het was wel heel leuk om te zien dat er heel veel mensen zijn die dat wel zijn (toch blijft het raar om een volwassene te zien met een Harry Potter bril) Op de tentoonstelling zie je bijna alle attributen en kostuums die gebruikt zijn in de films. Het is toch geweldig om de auto te zien van de Weasley's (Waar Harry en Ron in vliegen) en de verschillende kleding die Harry heeft gedragen in de films, of zijn toverstok. Joram werd uit het publiek gehaald zodat hij de Sorteerhoed op kon doen. Dat was natuurlijk helemaal geweldig en nog leuker was het dat hij gekozen werd als Griffioendor! Toch was er wel iets teleurstellends: Je mocht er absoluut geen foto's nemen, dus ik heb wel wat mooie plaatjes gemist. Helaas moet ik dus de foto's van de Warner Bros site plukken om te scrappen.

In de Harry Potter winkel kreeg Joram een Harry Potter bril, een toverstok en een Tijdverdrijver met een stickerboek. Veel te veel geld voor een paar souvenirs maar dit was toch een hele unieke ervaring voor Joram. Hij heeft zijn bril zelfs tijdens de Imax film gedragen!

Iets anders wat erg leuk was in het Ontario Science Centre was de Science Arcade. Wat ieder kind (en iedere volwassene) leuk vind is de proef met de statische electriciteit waarbij je haren rechtop gaan staan. En weer werd Joram uit het publiek gehaald om te laten zien wat het effect was van deze proef. En gelukkig kon ik toen wel foto's nemen.  Na de proeven kon de rest van het publiek ook de proef ondervinden en Joram wilde graag samen met mij. Nou, dat deed ik dus en daar had ik iets langer over na moeten denken....... Schijnbaar vond mijn haar het experiment erg leuk en ik werd uitgereoepen tot degene die het beste haar had voor de proef. Op al die aandacht zat ik natuurlijk niet te wachten. En ja: Ik zal hier een paar foto's laten zien. OP EEN EN OF ANDERE MANIER LAAT BLOGGER MIJN GEEN FOTO'S UPLOADEN, MAAR JE HOUDT ZE TEGOED!)

Joram was aan het einde van de dag helemaal uitgeput en viel in slaap in de auto met zijn Harry Potter bril op. En natuurlijk had Jinte ook een hele leuke dag gehad.

Morgen is het alweer weekend: Geniet ervan!

Camping at Crab Lake / Kamperen bij Crab Lake

DH Richard and DS Joram went with Rich's brother and his kids for a little camp and canoe trip over at Crab Lake in the Kawartha Highlands provincial park. They had a great time and even got to see some shooting stars at night. Pam, DD Jinte and myself stayed in Oshawa where we had a nice two days.

Joram did a lot of things he'd never done before; Camp in the middle of nowhere, eat Bannock, swim in a real lake and junping of a high rock into a lake. Very exciting. Well, the sleeping was a little less exciting, he was a little nervous about all the sounds he heard and about the fact that it is really dark (read: pitch black!) But considering all the new stuff he had an amazing time and came home exhausted.

Manlief Richard is samen met zoonlief Joram en Rich's broer en zijn kinderen twee dagen wezen kamperen en kanoeen bij Crab Lake in het Kawartha Highlands provincial park. Ze hebben het geweldig naar hun zin gehad en hebben zelfs 's nachts een aantal vallende sterren gezien. Pam, dochterlief Jinte en ik zijn in Oshawa gebleven waar we lekker rustig aan hebben gedaan.

Joram heeft een aantal dingen gedaan die hij nog nooit had gedaan. Kamperen op een plaats die verlaten is van alles wat je je maar kan bedenken, bannock eten, zwemmen in een echt meer en springen van een echte hoge rots (in een meer). Hij was zo enthousiast. Helaas was het slapen een beetje minder, he werd een beetje bang van alle geluiden die hij hoorde en dan ook nog het feit dat het erg donker was (zeg maar gerust pikdonker, je zag geen hand voor ogen!). Maar ondanks dat en alle nieuwe dingen die hij had gedaan kwam ie heel enthousiast en uitgeput thuis.

I have not been too good............ / Ik ben niet zo heel netjes geweest.......

It has been forever since my last post. There are two main reasons for that. The first one was the amazingly hot weather and because of that the high temperatures in our attic (where my studio and computer are) and the second reason is that we are right now in Canada visiting family and friends and spending some time on our own. We left on July the 27th (a day before DD Jinte's first birthday) so we have been here for quite a while.

So far we are having fun and indulging ourselves with the bad calories from Donuts and Hot Smoothies (Just LOVE the butter caramel one). We stayed at my inlaws beach house for a while. DD Joram always has a blast at the beach and this time was no exception. DD Jinte just loved playing in the sand. She would have a pale with water and all she did was filling it up with sand. Over and over again.

As for scrapping and crafting. I have been doing some stuff but never got the chance of taking pics yet. So that will have to wait until we get back.

Thanks to my dear mom is taking care of Joram's fishes and DF Nicole is taking care of our house and our cat. So we know that they are all in good hands.

Het was echt eeuwen geleden dat ik een bericht heb geplaatst op mijn blog. Daar zijn twee hele goede redenene voor. Een ervan is het hete weer dat maar niet over wilde gaan. En omdat mijn scrapkamer en onze PC opzolder staan was dat nu niet echt de plaats waar ik mijn tijd door wilde brengen. Een andere belangrijke reden is dat wij nu in Canada zitten. We zijn hier om familie en vrienden te bezoeken en nog wat tijd met ons viertjes door te brengen. We zijn vertrokken op 27 juli (de dag voor Jinte's haar eerste verjaardag) dus zijn we hier alweer een tijdje. 

Tot nu toe genieten we vooral en doen we ons tegoed aan allerlei vreselijke calorien zoals donuts en Hot Smoothies. (vooral de boter caramel is GEWELDIG!) We hebben een paar dagen doorgebracht in het strandhuis van mijn schoonouders, wat natuurlijk helemaal heerlijk was. Joram vindt het strand altijd geweldig en deze keer was geen uitzondering. Jinte vond het spelen met zand ook geweldig. Als je haar een emmer met water gaf schepte ze er zand in en bleef dit maar doen. Steeds weer.............

Wat betreft het scrappen en andere creatieve dingen: Ik heb wel het een en ander gdaan maar heb er nog geen foto's van gemaakt. Dat zal dus moeten wachten tot we weer thuis zijn.

Dankzij mijn moeder die voor de vissen van Joram zorgt en vriendin Nicole die voor het huis en de kat zorgt weten we dat we het thuis ook prima is.
